The Soil in south Lincolnshire Wolds

The soil is very shallow in places on the chalk Wolds of Lincolnshire. For hundreds of years these hills were covered with sheep grazing on the grass that covered the hills. Now many farms grow cereals and roots crops on these thin layers of relatively poor soil. The examples show areas of no more than 12 inch depth of soil. The chalk is clearly visible.
